The Dorset School celebrated
Children's Book Week with a visit from book illustrator Ginny
Joyner. Students in grades 2 through 5 enjoyed a wonderful
presentation by the illustrator of the book M is for Maple Syrup, A Vermont Alphabet.
Written by Cynthia Furlong Reynolds, illustrated by Joyner and
published by Sleeping Bear Press, this is an exciting and beautiful
reference book for students learning the history of our state.
Topics from Samuel de Champlain to Ben & Jerry's are presented in
an ABC poem form for the younger students with sidebars with more
detail for the older students.
Joyner brought her original artwork for the book and showed the process of creating a piece of art; beginning with rough sketches, tracing paper overlays, the "dummy manuscript," and research for the scenes. During the last few minutes the students were led through an easy "recipe" for drawing a maple leaf. This presentation was made possible and sponsored by the Southern Vermont Arts Center's Jonathin Levin Endowment Fund. |
