High School Choice
Parents of students attending The Dorset School have the opportunity to choose the high school they wish their child to attend. Two local options include:

Burr and Burton Academy located in Manchester, for which the Town of Dorset pays the entire tuition and provides bus transportation.

Long Trail School in Dorset: the Town of Dorset pays tuition up to the amount paid for students attending Burr and Burton. Long Trail provides some transportation to its students.

Students from Dorset who attend other approved non-religious affiliated high schools, within or out of Vermont, receive tuition equal to the average Vermont state public union high school tuition (this amount is set each year by the Vermont State Department of Education). Transportation is not provided.

Each year arrangements are made for our eighth grade students (and their parents, if they wish) to visit some area high schools in Manchester, Dorset, Rutland and Granville. Representatives from other high schools visit The Dorset School for a High School Fair or class presentations informing students as to their options.

Programs for parents, such as the Vermont Student Assistance Corporation’s “Early College Planning Night” offer additional assistance in making educational choices.

In May or June all eighth grade parents receive a letter from the BRSU with instructions on how to request tuition payment for the high school of their choice. No payment will be made to any high school, including Burr and Burton, unless this document is on file at the BRSU and Dorset residence has been verified.
